Speaking from a British point of view I often ask myself that question? Why?
I, for example was asked to come here 10yrs ago for a work contract. I spent near on a year in the Murcia area and absolutely loved it. I surrounded myself in the Spanish culture, tried to learn as much Spanish as I could, listened to Spanish radio, Spanish TV, eat Spanish food etc, etc, etc. Once my contract was complete I miserably said goodbye to the lovely friends I made, got on the plane and went miserably back home to the UK.
For the best part of 5yrs living back in the UK I practically spent every day wishing I could go back and would spend endless hours thinking of ways I could change my life........ What was it about Spain that had this hold over me? Why did I need to go back so badly?? Well the answer was blindingly obvious (for me anyway), THE LIFESTYLE! I’d embraced it. I’d embraced it like I had never embraced anything else in my life, for me it was HOME!
I’d sit with my friends eating the most amazingly fresh food in the simplest of places, a chiringuito on the beach, a friends patio, or a little restaurant terrace but the atmosphere was always of vibrance, the beautiful summer evenings with the smell of the Jasmin in the air and the crisp chilled wine to keep the humid nights at bay.
It’s hard for me not to paint a rose painted pictured because of course Spain like any place has its financial problems and many other issues but it is a fantastic country that offers a lifestyle that the UK simply Can’t!
In Dec 2011 I was offered another contract here in Murcia and I jumped at the chance and within 9 days of having the phone call I had packed my life and was back on that plane...I was coming home!
4 years later I am still here, it hasn’t been a bed of roses and there have been many changes and many ups and downs, but in my heart this is where I belong.....never say never but for me there is no plane in the world that I would enter to go back to live in the UK.....
